SKILLED INDEPENDENT 189 (PERMANENT) VISA – POINTS TESTED STREAM

If you are in or outside Australia and under 45 years old and meet the minimum 65 points including a skills assessment in an occupation on the 189 occupation list (MLTSSL), you can submit an expression of interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. However, you can only apply for the visa if you receive an invitation through SkillSelect. You could receive an invitation up to 2 years after submitting an EOI.

The 189 visa is intended to allow invited workers to live and work anywhere in Australia.

Suitable Skills Assessment

At the time of invitation, you must hold a suitable skills assessment for your nominated skilled occupation. The Subclass 485 skills assessments are not acceptable. The following skills assessments are suitable,

Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage)

457 Skills Assessment Program

Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP)

Migration Skills Assessment (MSA)

Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA)

Medical and legal practitioners, however can provide where applicable, full or unconditional or general medical registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Conditional specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. This only allows you to practise in your speciality. You need no further training or supervision admission to practice law in the relevant state or territory.

To be skills assessed on a qualification that was obtained in Australia while on a student visa, the qualification must have been from studying a CRICOS registered course. 191 visa

Visa Application

If you are invited to apply for the 189 visa, you will have 60 days to lodge a visa application. An invitation does not mean you guaranteed the visa. You can be in or outside of Australia when you lodge the visa application.
